Superfoods

I have to tell you that I was completely shocked to learn about some of these superfoods... It's funny that our society never really educates you about the power and greatness of natural foods but instead we are continuously bombarded with ads from fast food and pharmaceutical drug companies.... well I won't get into that since that's a different topic for a different blog! lol

Today I would like to speak about two "under-rated" superfoods known as Chlorella and Chia Seeds...

And just incase you're wondering..... well, what is a superfood???

I will be more than happy to tell you!

A superfood is a food that has many health benefits. They normally contain a very high phytonutrient content. (Phytonutrients are found in plants and they provide wonderful health benefits.)

I personally believe that natural foods in general are amazing and offer an abundance of vitamins and minerals, therefore to me they are all superfoods... but I must admit that there are some that stand out above the rest, here are 2 of my favorites... for now!!! lol :D

1) Chia Seeds
Does any one remember the Chia Pets???? Chi chi chi CHIA!!!! :D
Yes my friends, the seeds are a supergrain! One ounce of chia seeds offer: the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk, as much fibre as 1/3 cup of bran, as much omega 3 as 8 ounces of salmon, as much iron as 1/3 cup of spinach leaves, as much vitamin C as 2 oranges , as much potassium as 1/2 a banana plus other nutrients... isn't that amazing??? You can add them to your baked goods, cereal or just chew them as is...

Now here's my ultimate favorite... sorry chia seeds! lol

2) Chlorella
* (Persons taking blood thinners or Coumadin should consult a physician before taking Chlorella since the vitamin K content may interfere with their medication).

Chlorella is a single-cell green algae found in fresh and salt waters. It is usually sold as a supplement in capsule, liquid or powder form. I call Chlorella a super supplement because it offers so much more than your average supplements.

Here are some of the benefits: 1) It fights cancer (A study done on mice with breast tumours resulted in a 70% survival rate within the chlorella fed group and a control group survival rate of zero!). 2) It is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, and is one of the few whole food sources of vitamin D. It also contains a complete vitamin B complex and by weight has more vitamin B-12 than liver ! 3) There is also an abundance of beta carotene, lutein, and two carotenoids which help to fight disease and aging! 4) Minerals found in chlorella include: Zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, rare trace minerals and essential fatty acids. It also contains pepsin and other enzymes which helps to ease digestion.

and this is not all..... there's more!

Chlorella growth factor offers many of the benefits found in the human growth hormone. Chlorella is up to 10% RNA, and up to 3% DNA. It contains 19 amino acids and helps to maximize energy levels by increasing the red blood cell count. It also provides natural detoxification, cholesterol regulation, estrogen balance, immune system strength, inflammation control, blood sugar stabilization, and proper digestion. It is loaded with antioxidants and even reduces body fat percentage! Chlorella acts as an excellent detoxifier because it binds with toxins, heavy metals and pesticides. This is more than a superfood or super supplement, this is a superior food! The best thing about Chlorella is that it is not man-made it was manufactured by nature making it one the greatest plants that we will ever ingest!

Well that's all for today, maybe I'll do a superfoods part two... ;)

Remember staying natural is staying healthy!

Peace and Love
